Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Program
The Sustainable forest Initiative® program (SFI) is a national program of standards and performance measures developed to recognize landowners who practice sustainable forestry.
Sustainable forestry is a concept based on the premise that responsible environmental practices and sound business practices are complementary. More than 136 million acres of forestland in North America are certified under the SFI program, and since its inception in 1995, SFI members have planted more than 4.5 billion trees.
The SFI program is managed by an independent board of landowners, professional foresters, conservationists, and scientists who have developed more than 100 internationally recognized standards for sustainable forestry. Those standards cover a wide variety of indicators, including balancing harvest and growth rates, protecting streams and stream banks, protecting biodiversity, and preserving cultural resources.
