Monitoring
Port Blakely's scientists survey our lands to help chart the distribution of rare plant and animal species, as well as other sensitive sites requiring special protections. This information helps us plan and implement appropriate conservation measures to insure the protection of sensitive resources.
We conduct field surveys to assess the condition of in-stream habitat, the extent of fish and fish habitat in our streams, the composition and age of our upland forests, and the extent of understory development in those forests. We give special emphasis to identifying any state and/or federally listed threatened and endangered species and other species or habitats considered to be sensitive to forest management.
By monitoring changes in terrestrial and aquatic habitats through time, we are able to evaluate the effectiveness of our conservation measures. Through this process we are able to learn from our practices and to incorporate this knowledge into our management practices.
