Forest Management
Managing our forests is a lifelong commitment. We plant more than one million trees a year, knowing that we will be managing these stands for the next generation of foresters.
We plant all of our seedlings by hand and monitor them to ensure that they are strong and vigorous. As the young forest grows, we periodically thin the trees to promote growth and remove diseased or defective trees.
When its time for final harvest, a Port Blakely forester works with our staff scientists to develop a harvest plan that minimizes our impact on wildlife and the environment while protecting the soils and preparing the site for the planting of the next forest.
Immediately following the harvest, the planting process begins again.
