Good neighbors
For the past several years, our forestry team has been one of 12 corporate teams that compete in a sand sculpture contest to benefit Olympia's Children's Hands-on Museum. The museum stimulates curiosity, creativity and learning through fun, interactive exhibits and programs for children, families and school groups.
In 2006, our
team assembled once again for a fourth venture at sand
sculpting. Our design of a family of bears raiding
a fisherman's camp for his dinner won the second place
"Silver Shovel" award at the event. Our team sponsorship
helps support the Museum's program to provide free
admittance for those families who cannot afford the cost
of entrance to the exhibits.
The Children's Hands-on Museum is a perennial favorite of Port Blakely Tree Farms employees, who contribute every year to support the Museum.
Port Blakely Tree farms also supports Harmony Hill, a nonprofit Wellness Retreat Center in Union, Washington. Harmony Hill is the Pacific Northwest's only wellness and retreat center focused on providing assistance to people challenged by life-threatening or chronic disease.
High School Scholars
Port Blakely employees donate their time and money to support scholarships for high school students who want to go to college. One such program is Dollars for Scholars, which benefits students at Centralia High School, in Centralia, Washington. In 2002, Centralia's Dollars for Scholars program raised almost $24,000 for college-bound students.
Coos Fire Protection Association
During the height of fire season, in the Spring of 2001, Port Blakely donated a fire tanker to the Coos Fire Protection Association (CFPA) in Coos Bay, Oregon. The tanker was no longer needed by Port Blakely, but it was desperately needed by the CFPA. The CFPA is a 90-year-old non-profit organization that protects private forest land in Coos, Curry, and parts of Douglas County.
The Christmas Forest
Each year, Port Blakely Tree Farms and its employees donate significant amounts of time, energy, and money to The Christmas Forest charity auction to benefit the Sisters of Providence hospitals in Olympia and Centralia.
Port Blakely plays a major role in organizing and sponsoring this event, and the company is also sure to be the high bidder on one of the donated Christmas trees.
