With a background in economics and finance, he began his working career in Seattle, Washington with the Simpson Timber Company, Interface Mechanisms, IBM and Truckweld Corporation. In 1978, Jim joined the The Port Blakely Mill Co. (predecessor to Port Blakely Tree Farms) and currently holds the position of Chairman and General Partner of Port Blakely Companies.

He currently serves on the boards of several local companies and organizations, including The Association of Washington Business, the Foundation for Economic & Environmental Progress, The Pacific Science Center, The Joshua Green Corporation, Penford Corporation and The Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce.
