Port Blakely's intermediate forests span from 20 years to over 70 years old. If a developing forest becomes too crowded, then all the trees slow down in growth because they are competing for sunlight, water and nutrients.
Foresters use a process called thinning to remove diseased and suppressed trees, so the other trees can grow faster and healthier.
